According to ancient maritime lore, a sailor could face lifelong misfortune if his shadow touched land before he did while disembarking from his vessel. By carrying his belongings in a metaphorical “shadow” box, he protected himself by reaching the ground before his shadow did. Today, shadow boxes have transformed into a beautiful folk art. Students will learn the basics of woodworking to complete their own shadow boxes with seashell treasures. All materials will be provided, but students may bring their own tools if they wish.
