Astoria’s lesser-known neighbor makes a perfect home base for watching ships enter the Columbia River, dipping into history, and exploring the wonders of the state’s northwestern tip.

Guided zip line tours at High Life Adventures are built for speed. Strap in and soar along a mile of lines over a seven-acre lake on forested property, or test your courage on the new Zwing zip line swing.
Locals are crazy about the red enchiladas and cilantro margaritas at Tacos El Catrin. Authentic menudo and pozole appear on the weekend menu at this bright taqueria with an open kitchen.
Stroll a portion of the 8.5 miles of paths in the Warrenton Waterfront Trail system for riverside sights. North of the trail’s E.H. Carruthers Memorial Park, find stellar views of the steel-truss Astoria-Megler Bridge over the river.
Razor clamming on Clatsop County beaches begins in April. A crowd of diggers congregates near the skeleton of the shipwreck Peter Iredale to capture native razor clams. (Check for shellfish-harvesting closures on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife website: tinyurl.com/orshellfish.)
At the Fort Stevens State Park historic area just west of Warrenton, a military museum mounts exhibits of the fort’s past from the 1860s to the late 1940s, including Japanese attacks on the Oregon Coast during World War II. Return in summer to tour a preserved cell in the post guardhouse nearby.
