45th PARALLEL UNIVERSE ORCHESTRA

PRIMORDIAL SWAMP

The Liberty Presents
October 11th, 7pm
$30 per show, $25 with season package

One of the best things about 45th Parallel is the idea that a group of restless musicians could get together in a room and come up with creative and unconventional programs that don’t otherwise fit in our respective ensembles. Our first Primordial Swamp will feature the world premiere of a new work by Brandon Scott Rumsey, a 45th Parallel commission. We’ll also celebrate the release of 45th Parallel’s latest recording with a performance of Dohnanyi’s Sextet.

WORKS:
Ernst von Dohnanyi: Sextet in C Major, Op. 37
The Sextet in C Major, Op.37, dates from 1935 and is Dohnanyi's last piece of chamber music. It is for the unusual combination of clarinet, horn, piano, violin, viola, and cello. This fact has virtually ensured it would be little heard in concert—a great pity because it is a masterwork. From a tonal standpoint, the Sextet shows Dohnanyi alive to the musical developments in the Europe of the 1930’s, jazz in particular, which was gaining a real foothold throughout western and central Europe.
Brandon Scott Rumsey: Sextet for Piano and Winds (world premiere)
Brandon Scott Rumsey is a composer, bassoonist, and teacher based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His compositions emphasize harmony, rhythm, texture, and orchestrational color and frequently explore themes of love, nature, and conversation.
Reza Vali: Folk Song Suite
Reza Vali was born in Iran, collects and transcribes Persian folk songs and is one of very few composers writing Persian-inspired Western classical music.

Music from 7pm-8pm. Please join us for a post-performance reception with our artists in our McTavish Room immediately following the performance! Main doors open at 6:30pm. Free tickets for students under 18 years old are available in our box office.
