"Though the oldest American city west of the Mississippi, Astoria is in many respects the newest in the land. December 8, 1922, fire swept the heart of Astoria, leaving behind it a desert of ashes 40 acres in extent where the business district had been. The loss was in excess of $11,000,000...The problems of reconstruction were tremendous."
