Since 2016, the Barbey Maritime Center's Sam Johnson Woodworking Shop has hosted a casual, weekly meeting of carving enthusiasts. Carvers work on current projects, as well as trade tips, techniques and design ideas. Each participant should bring their own tools and materials. The carving group is a great way to maintain skills and develop new ones. Please note that Carving Club capacity is limited to 12 carvers max.

The first cannery on the Columbia River was established by brothers William and George Hume and their partner, Andrew Hapgood, in 1866. Less than twenty years later, there were dozens of canneries along the Columbia. Join our education crew to learn about the history of Columbia River canneries, their impact on North Oregon coast communities, and the legacy they leave behind.

Let's have a safe and legal blast on America's birthday. Reminder, only consumer fireworks obtained from an Oregon permitted retail stand, such as cones, fountains, and other ground-based fireworks are allowed. Please also consider your neighbors and  pets before deciding on when and where you choose to light legal fireworks.

The Chimes of Liberty Will Peal at the North Coast Symphonic Band’s Free July 3 Concert

The North Coast Symphonic Band (NCSB) concludes its 46th season with a free concert Friday, July 3, 2026 at the Liberty Theatre.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m.

The event is sponsored by a generous donation by the Astoria Clowns. The concert will feature a parade of patriotic marches, including “The Chimes of Liberty” written by Edwin Franko Goldman in 1922 and the 1896 John Philip Sousa classic, “The Stars and Stripes Forever;” plus tributes to veterans, nostalgic callbacks, and more. The band is conducted by Terry Dahlgren of Warrenton, Oregon. NCSB Board President Brian Bergman will be the concert’s emcee. Featured guest vocalist Deac Guidi will perform the national anthem, “America the Beautiful,” “Salute to America’s Finest,” and George and Ira Gershwin’s swing standard, “But Not for Me.” Admission is free, thanks to the sponsorship of the Astoria Clowns.

The Liberty Theatre is located at the corner of 12th and Commercial streets in Astoria. The North Coast Symphonic Band (NCSB) is a nonprofit community performing arts group composed of local musicians of all ages who enjoy networking, learning from each other, and maintaining their skill levels in a positive and supportive environment. The NCSB performs four concerts per year at the historic Liberty Theatre in Astoria. Rehearsals are from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays at the Charlene Larsen Center for the Performing Arts (PAC) in Astoria. All sections are currently full, but musicians interested in joining a waiting list should email Personnel Director Lee Stromquist at encore1@charter.net or call (503) 861-1328. Potential new members should read music, own their own instruments, and have advanced high school level performance skills or higher. Join us in celebrating our country's 250th Semiquincentennial Anniversary. The museum is very excited to celebrate with flag art from South Bend, Raymond, and Willapa Valley Schools. Step into the layered story of Astoria, where river, sea, and hillside converge, on a guided walking tour through the Downtown Astoria Historic District. Offered weekly by the Lower Columbia Preservation Society, these tours explore the architectural heritage, working waterfront history, and civic ambitions that shaped Oregon’s oldest American settlement.

Tours are point-to-point, beginning at the Astoria Nordic Heritage Park and concluding at the Flavel House Museum, traversing approximately ten blocks over the course of 90 minutes. Along the way, participants encounter landmark commercial buildings, vernacular streetscapes, and stories of industry, immigration, and resilience that continue to define Astoria’s character.

Walking tours are offered Sundays, from Mother’s Day through mid-October, and are led by knowledgeable LCPS volunteer guides with deep ties to local history and preservation advocacy. Each tour emphasizes both architectural observation and the broader cultural context of the place inviting participants to see familiar streets with fresh eyes. The tour will finish with enough time to enjoy lunch at the Sunday Market in downtown Astoria, or you'll be in time to join the Liberty Theater tour starting at noon. 

Price: Pay as you can, with a suggested donation of $10/person.

Have you ever wondered why you never see sea otters in Oregon? Sea otter populations along the Pacific Coast were severely impacted by the 18th-19th century fur trade. Learn more about this history and how the fur trade affected the very animals it was built off. The presentation will conclude with a hands-on portion where guests will get to feel the pelts of animals hunted during the fur trade. Talk runs 20 minutes in the Ford Room. Seating for 24 is first-come, first-serve.

Come learn where to find local, in-season seafood, how it’s caught, and how to buy it directly from coastal ports. Sailor’s fancywork is an intricate maritime art from the Age of Sail where mariners spent their idle time working on macrame and decorative knots. Join Ship’s Bos’n, Able Seaman and Marlinspike Seamanship instructor Jason “Boats” Linnett for this introductory course into the world of fancywork as students create their own star knot. No prior experience is needed, and all materials are provided.

Join us to experience a simulation of packing an emergency kit for a World War II era lifeboat! The Gunderson Brothers Engineering Corporation was a Portland-based shipbuilding company that made lifeboats for the US Navy during World War II, one of which will be on display in Warnock Building this fall. Work in groups to discuss the pros and cons of what to pack. Learn about how to plan for an emergency, teamwork, healthy debate and discussion, and about what went into a historic lifeboat emergency kit.

Astoria Column Marks 100 Years as an Enduring Symbol of Oregon History

The Centennial Celebration Ignites the North Coast with Signature Events on July 18  

The iconic Astoria Column, one of the Pacific Northwest’s most recognizable landmarks, will celebrate its centennial in July, 2026, marking 100 years since its dedication in 1926. Rising high above the Columbia River and the city of Astoria, the Column has stood for a century as a monument to the region’s rich and layered history.  

Completed in 1926, the Astoria Column was inspired by Rome’s Trajan Column and built to commemorate the pioneering spirit of the Pacific Northwest and the founding of Astoria—the oldest permanent United States settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. Rising 125 feet above the city, the Column stands as a powerful symbol of exploration, perseverance, and place. Its signature spiral sgraffito mural—the only one of its kind in the world—depicts pivotal moments in regional history, from Native American heritage and early exploration to the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the growth of the American West.

The centennial is a chance to celebrate local heritage, honor those who built and preserved the monument, and inspire future generations to value their history. Centennial activities planned for 2026 will honor the Column’s legacy while inviting new generations to engage with Astoria’s past. Signature events will include a multicultural celebration with community groups showcasing Astoria’s heritage, present & future. Visitors and locals will enjoy multicultural entertainment and food, community booths, arts and crafts, live music and more from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Astoria.
A rededication ceremony will also occur at the base of the Column.

Step into the layered story of Astoria, where river, sea, and hillside converge, on a guided walking tour through the Downtown Astoria Historic District. Offered weekly by the Lower Columbia Preservation Society, these tours explore the architectural heritage, working waterfront history, and civic ambitions that shaped Oregon’s oldest American settlement.

Tours are point-to-point, beginning at the Astoria Nordic Heritage Park and concluding at the Flavel House Museum, traversing approximately ten blocks over the course of 90 minutes. Along the way, participants encounter landmark commercial buildings, vernacular streetscapes, and stories of industry, immigration, and resilience that continue to define Astoria’s character.

Walking tours are offered Sundays, from Mother’s Day through mid-October, and are led by knowledgeable LCPS volunteer guides with deep ties to local history and preservation advocacy. Each tour emphasizes both architectural observation and the broader cultural context of the place inviting participants to see familiar streets with fresh eyes. The tour will finish with enough time to enjoy lunch at the Sunday Market in downtown Astoria, or you'll be in time to join the Liberty Theater tour starting at noon. 

Price: Pay as you can, with a suggested donation of $10/person.
