Slang is unofficial and unconventional, but it reflects how people really talk to one another. There’s a long list of words and turns of phrase we use today that originate from the maritime world. Explore the Brix Maritime Hall and This is Our Place, a recent collaboration with the Chinook Indian Nation, or shop the Museum Store when doors open at 5:30. Then join us for a presentation with US Navy Veteran, US Coast Guard Veteran, Merchant Mariner, and Thalassophile Jason “Boats” Linnett to dive into the maritime origins of many common phrases. This program is for guests aged 21 and up. A drink ticket option is available for purchase with lecture registration.

Snag a spot in the Ford Room to learn about lightships! Explore worldwide use of lightships, lightship station Columbia River, and how technological advances changed the way navigational aids were needed and used. Included with museum admission.

Plan your visit to the museum on a Friday and enjoy chatting with a Gallery Docent or engaging with the EDU Cart. - Gallery Docents specialize in a specific gallery, so ask at the front desk for their location and dive deep into the nitty gritty. This month we share our Canneries Gallery Docent, Lynne! - EDU Carts showcase touchable items related to the gallery they set up in. These are great for learners of all ages who want to get hands on with maritime history. One of these offerings are available in the museum on Fridays from 10:30 AM – 12 noon.

Come join us in a night of music and dancing to honor our men and women in uniform! The Dukes of Swing will be performing on Saturday, March 28th from 3:00pm - 6:00pm at the Fort Columbia Theater in Chinook, WA. (No Discover Pass needed). A $20 suggested donation includes food, fun and music.

Event Details

Friends of Suomi Hall will hold a banquet and auction to raise funds to stabilize and restore the 142-year-old Suomi Hall so it can continue to be used as lodge and community event space. The banquet will start at 5 PM on Saturday, March 28, at the Loft at the Red Building on Basin Street in Astoria. The Bridgewater Bistro will cater the dinner and the public is welcome. Nordic attire is encouraged. Details are available at www.suomihall.org.

Event Details

In the era of wooden boats, "chafing mats" were woven out of repurposed fishing line and placed on the deck in high traffic areas to reduce wear and tear on the wooden surface. It was regarded as a boat "accessory" and many sailors who had pride in their craft learned how to weave them. Register for CRMM's Maritime Weaving Club to try your hand at these historic patterns!

Come check out the Sam Johnson Woodworking Shop at the Barbey Maritime Center. This shop hosts weekly carving club, bi-monthly weaving club in the winter, plus numerous adult education workshops. This old train depot will be open from 1:30-3:30 to explore and chat with our education crew.

The Icons of Rock Tribute Show brings you EIGHT amazing tributes in ONE night! Icons of Rock is a full-throttle celebration of rock’s biggest legends — AC/DC, Van Halen, Shania Twain, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Ozzy Osbourne and Poison. Packed with wall-to-wall hits and relentless energy, this is one epic night of rock you don’t want to miss.

Director Katherine Lacaze is seeking five Female or Non Gender Conforming actors to play multiple roles in our May-June production. Actors should be comfortable playing both male and female characters, and must be of the ethnic background outlined in the character descriptions below.

Rehearsals will be scheduled based on the group’s availability, and will likely include evenings and weekends. Performances run May 29th - June 13th. Actors will receive a $100 stipend at the close of the production.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
The Men’s Peer Education group at Watson College is dedicated to unpacking and exposing male privilege. These “sensitive guys” believe that through increased self-awareness they can end sexual violence on campus; but when a shocking rumor surfaces, the group is shaken to the core. Sensitive Guys features a cast of women and gender nonconforming actors, double-cast as male and female characters, who try to understand men who are trying to understand masculinity.

Plan to visit between 12:30 and 2:00 PM for Scrimshaw in the Ford Room with our Education Crew. See images of real scrimshaw, learn how sailors made them and why it is illegal today. The faux scrimshaw created will be made using soap, nails, ink, and a Q-Tip. Included with museum admission.

Enjoy maritime board and card games in the Ford Room at the front of the museum. Games will be available throughout the time window for self-exploration or join a facilitated bingo game with prizes at 11:15 and 11:45 AM as well as 12:15 PM and 12:45 PM. Included in museum admission.

Join Mac Burns, Executive Director of the Clatsop County Historical Society, for a fascinating, and occasionally graphic, talk about Clatsop County Coroner inquests from 1905-1909. Presentation is part of the Astoria Library Friends Association's annual meeting. Following the presentation, ALFA members get early access to the new ALFA Bookshop!
