Since 2016, the Barbey Maritime Center's Sam Johnson Woodworking Shop has hosted a casual, weekly meeting of carving enthusiasts.  Carvers work on current projects, as well as trade tips, techniques and design ideas.  Each participant should bring their own tools and materials. The carving group is a great way to maintain skills and develop new ones. Please note that Carving Club capacity is limited to 12 carvers max.

Director Dylan Disch is seeking an ensemble of 10 actors for our December production of Assassins by Stephen Sondheim.

Please arrive 10 minutes before start time with a list of any/all conflicts between now and December 19th and a prepared segment of a back-track (no longer than one minute long) in the form of something accessible via YouTube or Spotify. Actors will be asked to sing and read from provided sides.

If you wish to audition, but are unable to attend the scheduled dates, please contact us no later than September 3rd to make other arrangements.

Performances run December 4th - 19th. Actors will receive a $100 stipend at the closing of the production.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
A multiple Tony Award-winning theatrical tour-de-force, Assassins combines Sondheim's signature blend of intelligently stunning lyrics and beautiful music with a panoramic story of our nation's culture of celebrity and the violent means some will use to obtain it, embodied by America's four successful and five would-be presidential assassins. Bold, original, disturbing and alarmingly funny, Assassins is perhaps the most controversial musical ever written.

Assassins lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in a one-act historical "revusical" that explores the dark side of the American experience. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, writers, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman, bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a nightmarish roller coaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet, interact and inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream.

The Trail’s End Art Association Gallery will open a new show in September featuring Carolyn Myers Lindberg and Elizabeth Roberts. There will be a reception for our featured artists on Sept. 5th, during the Gearhart Art Walk, 2-5 pm. This show will be open on Labor Day weekend10-5pm, and then Fridays–Sundays, 11am–3 pm from Sept 8th to Sept. 27th.

Step into the layered story of Astoria, where river, sea, and hillside converge, on a guided walking tour through the Downtown Astoria Historic District. Offered weekly by the Lower Columbia Preservation Society, these tours explore the architectural heritage, working waterfront history, and civic ambitions that shaped Oregon’s oldest American settlement.

Tours are point-to-point, beginning at the Astoria Nordic Heritage Park and concluding at the Flavel House Museum, traversing approximately ten blocks over the course of 90 minutes. Along the way, participants encounter landmark commercial buildings, vernacular streetscapes, and stories of industry, immigration, and resilience that continue to define Astoria’s character.

Walking tours are offered Sundays, from Mother’s Day through mid-October, and are led by knowledgeable LCPS volunteer guides with deep ties to local history and preservation advocacy. Each tour emphasizes both architectural observation and the broader cultural context of the place inviting participants to see familiar streets with fresh eyes. The tour will finish with enough time to enjoy lunch at the Sunday Market in downtown Astoria, or you'll be in time to join the Liberty Theater tour starting at noon. 

Price: Pay as you can, with a suggested donation of $10/person.

Experience life as a water molecule while traveling through the water cycle! During Sensory Sunday this month, roll a die to determine the next step on your journey and assemble a water cycle bead bracelet as you go. During Sensory Sunday, audio in the exhibits are lowered or turned completely off and the Ford Room is turned into a self-regulation station with soft seating, dimmed lights, fidgets and activities. Sensory Sunday runs the first Sunday of the month except January, July, and December.

Traditional rug hooking has a rich history of using simple materials to create beautiful rugs and hangings. Apply this tradition to our maritime heritage twice a month in a casual, supportive setting. An initial introductory kit will be available for purchase $40 for incoming rug hookers looking to explore the craft. Each participant should bring their own tools and materials for other projects. Event Details

In the era of wooden boats, “chafing mats” were woven out of repurposed fishing line and placed on the deck in high traffic areas to reduce wear and tear on the wooden surface. It was regarded as a boat ‘accessory’ and many fishermen who had pride in their craft learned how to weave them. Over the course of a Saturday afternoon, students will work in pairs to create their own Oval Knot from repurposed fishing line.

Since 2016, the Barbey Maritime Center's Sam Johnson Woodworking Shop has hosted a casual, weekly meeting of carving enthusiasts.  Carvers work on current projects, as well as trade tips, techniques and design ideas.  Each participant should bring their own tools and materials. The carving group is a great way to maintain skills and develop new ones. Please note that Carving Club capacity is limited to 12 carvers max.

Typically, Most dress as Helen, with a colorful caftan or MuMu, chunky jewelry, glasses, and a curly redhead wig or just put a flower in your hair! Bearded Helens are extra fun, or you are welcome to dress up as her husband, Stanley Roper, or Mr. Furley (Don Knotts) or even a Jack Tripper, Janet Woods or Chrissy Snow! Can't forget their friend Larry! and come to the peninsula and join other Helens as you choose your own romp of things you want to do! With the help of spices, herbs, vinegars and water, the plants chemically combine their individual chemistry with the chemistry of photographic paper resulting in an unpredictable and lovely lumen photograph. Julie is a cross-disciplinary artist specializing in lens-based mediums, seamlessly blending collage, lumen, photo-gravure, and intaglio printing. Step into the layered story of Astoria, where river, sea, and hillside converge, on a guided walking tour through the Downtown Astoria Historic District. Offered weekly by the Lower Columbia Preservation Society, these tours explore the architectural heritage, working waterfront history, and civic ambitions that shaped Oregon’s oldest American settlement.

Tours are point-to-point, beginning at the Astoria Nordic Heritage Park and concluding at the Flavel House Museum, traversing approximately ten blocks over the course of 90 minutes. Along the way, participants encounter landmark commercial buildings, vernacular streetscapes, and stories of industry, immigration, and resilience that continue to define Astoria’s character.

Walking tours are offered Sundays, from Mother’s Day through mid-October, and are led by knowledgeable LCPS volunteer guides with deep ties to local history and preservation advocacy. Each tour emphasizes both architectural observation and the broader cultural context of the place inviting participants to see familiar streets with fresh eyes. The tour will finish with enough time to enjoy lunch at the Sunday Market in downtown Astoria, or you'll be in time to join the Liberty Theater tour starting at noon. 

Price: Pay as you can, with a suggested donation of $10/person.
