Since 2016, the Barbey Maritime Center's Sam Johnson Woodworking Shop has hosted a casual, weekly meeting of carving enthusiasts. Carvers work on current projects, as well as trade tips, techniques and design ideas. Each participant should bring their own tools and materials. The carving group is a great way to maintain skills and develop new ones. Please note that Carving Club capacity is limited to 12 carvers max.

Learn the basics of relief stamp printing in this introductory class as we explore the museum’s collection in a new light! Students will recreate historic artifacts as relief stamps to create 5x7 greeting cards to take home. No experience with hand tools necessary. Note that students will be expected to purchase a Speedball Linoleum Handle – Lino Handle No. 1, Set of 5 Cutters ($20) and a 4x6 Speedball Speedy-Carve surface ($7). Both are available locally at Fine Art Supply (303 Marine Drive), where students will receive a 10% discount.

Experience nature through direct observation, drawing, painting and writing. No experience necessary! This is a low-key class about learning to see, reflect & question, with some creative use of simple materials. Your skill level does not matter. Instructor will provide paper, props, and water-soluble markers in basic colors. Please bring a pencil, black extra-fine tip permanent marker, white or kneaded eraser, and any media you like that blends with water such as water-soluble markers (Crayola brand is fine!), watercolors, watercolor pencils and/or water-soluble crayons.

Want to learn more about wildlife local to the Columbia River and the Oregon Coast? Join our Museum Educator, Maddy, for a nature walk along the waterfront starting at the Museum’s Plaza at 17th Street and turning around at Mill Pond. Practice your wildlife identification skills, learn fun facts about common species, and experience maritime history and culture from a new viewpoint. Feel free to bring binoculars and/or a wildlife guidebook or application (such as Merlin Bird ID or iNaturalist). Wear comfortable shoes and come prepared for whatever weather Astoria decides to throw at us! We will have some loaner binoculars available for use during the walk. Homeschool Day Spring 2026 is all about safety on the water! Registration for this half-day program includes a Rescue at Sea Learning Lab and stations throughout the museum galleries. Add an exploration of Lightship Columbia with a tour of the Engine Room** or a 3D movie viewing. Rescue at Sea Learning Lab: In this hands-on program, students will learn about dangerous waters of the Pacific Northwest, the people who put their lives on the line to keep others safe, how to avoid wrecking your ship, and try to rescue distressed mariners in a unique game.

Our education crew is celebrating Lightship Columbia’s Diamond Jubilee with a special lecture that shares the history of lightships at the mouth of the Columbia River and highlights WLV-604, which was the last active lightship on the West Coast and is CRMM’s largest artifact. Registrar Meg Glazier-Anderson will also be on site with special lightship artifacts from the museum’s collection that are not typically on display to the public. Join us!
