The show follows Santa as he quits Christmas and sets out to find the true meaning of celebrating the holidays. Wit & Wisdom: What does Public Philosophy do? Two philosophers sit down to think out loud about a question at the heart of Philosofarian's work: What does public philosophy do? Does it change how people listen to one another? Does it shift how a community understands itself? What happens when thinking becomes something shared rather than hidden? And what possibilities emerge when ordinary places become places of wonder? Meet the Speakers Kaarina Beam Kaarina’s work centers on social and political philosophy, applied ethics, and philosophy of education — fields that examine how people live together and what shapes our choices. Her thinking is also grounded in years teaching abroad in China, Nepal, India, and Bhutan, where she studies how different societies approach responsibility, community, and ethical life. She brings a reflective, people-forward approach to the ways philosophy moves through lived experience. Local philosopher Seth Tichenor Seth has been exploring how people think, learn, and change through shared conversation here in Astoria for more than a decade. His background and training are in comparative philosophy, especially South Asian traditions, but his lifelong project is local: helping our community discover what becomes possible when people think together. Seth’s approach is rooted in curiosity, stories, and the belief that philosophy belongs in everyday life. Together, Kaarina and Seth will explore “What does public philosophy do?” through an open conversation that invites the community to wonder alongside them.

Light in the Darkness is an outdoor event sponsored by the Astoria Scandinavian Heritage Association to remember those who have passed but are still in our memories at Christmas time. It’s also a fundraiser for Astoria Nordic Heritage Park and an opportunity to experience the park and enjoy community at nighttime. Light in the Darkness will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 PM on Friday, December 12, with a brief ceremony at 6 PM. In case of rain, canopies will be provided. Wear warm clothing, and bring a lawn chair if you prefer to sit. The Nordic Park is located between 15^th and 16^th on Marine Drive at the entrance to downtown Astoria. 
 
Over eighty memorial candles will be lit in honor of those who are missing this Christmas season. Their names will be read during a brief ceremony of music, poetry, and song. Lou Ann Thorsness will be emcee. Pastor Steve Kienberger who has lived in Norway will explain the significance of the candles. Local poet Jim Dott will read two of his original poems on grief written especially for the occasion. Miss Scandinavia 2023 Molly Oien Lindstrom will read additional poetry and sing “Beautiful is the Earth/ Dejlig er Jorden” in Danish and English. Thorsness, Kienberger, and Dott will read the memorial names. The candles will stay lit for two hours starting at 5:30 PM so people can stroll, take photos, and experience the special lights enhancing the atmosphere of the Nordic Park at night. Bonnie Fisher of VASA Swedish Lodge Astor Lodge #215 and Beth Kandoll of Friends of Suomi Hall will supply coffee, cider, and cookies. There will be seasonal Christmas music.  
 
To have your loved one’s name be part of this ceremony and to assist the Astoria Scandinavian Heritage Association with maintenance and ongoing expenses at Astoria Nordic Heritage Park, mail the name of the individual you are honoring and a check made out to ASHA with a minimum donation of $25 per name to Light in the Darkness, ASHA, PO Box 34, Astoria OR 97103. It is also possible to donate online at www.AstoriaNordicPark.org on the Contribute page. The deadline to get names in the program and read aloud at the ceremony is 5 PM, Wednesday, December 10.

Along the way, Buddy spreads cheer in the most unexpected ways, reminding everyone that “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”
To add to the fun, we’re inviting everyone to come dressed in North Pole attire—elves, snowflakes, candy canes, or anything festive. 

Sock-Ball Fight for a Cause: Bring a pair (or more!) of new, clean socks to donate to those in need. During the iconic snowball fight scene, you’ll get to join in the fun with a sock-ball fight of our own—soft, safe, and full of holiday spirit. All donated socks will go to local shelters to help keep our community warm this winter.

The Warrenton Community Library is hosting author Brittany Sweet at "Library After Dark" on Saturday, December 13 at 4 p.m. Brittany will share more about her writing process, read excerpts from her work and answer audience questions. Brittany Sweet is an Oregon Coast author whose work spans children’s literature and modern poetry. Her titles, including "Bye Bye Buoy", "Encore for Eleanor", and "I’ll Carry You Forever", combine coastal imagery with themes of courage, identity, and self-acceptance. Known for her lyrical voice and emotional depth, Brittany creates stories that inspire readers of all ages to see beauty in their differences. Her poetry collection, "Coffee Over Dead Friends", highlights grieving in all forms, exploring love, friendship, and self-discovery in modern times. Brittany’s books are available locally inside the Columbia River Maritime Museum and Rascals Gift Shop, and she regularly attends craft fairs and farmers markets across the Oregon Coast to share her stories with readers in person. She continues to write and connect with her community by attending poetry events like Women Who Write to Heal and reading to preschools locally! The Peninsula Association of Performing Artists presents its annual Christmas fundraiser: Carols, Cookies & Cocoa, located at the Fort Columbia Theater at 475 US-101 N Chinook, WA 98614. Saint Nicholas returns to the Flavel House Museum during the Old-Fashioned Christmas event on Monday, December 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Visitors will enjoy an evening of holiday cheer in the festively decorated mansion. There will be crafts, cookies, hot chocolate, and a special visit from Old St. Nick. Members of the North Coast Chorale will add to the festivities with Christmas carols from the Flavels’ music room.

Free to CCHS members, non-members are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $2.00 for children ages 6-17.

The Fort & Friends Makers Market is BACK Wednesday, December 17th 4pm – 8pm.

Join the uniquely talented and extremely productive employees of Fort George (and a few of our friends and family members) the last weekend in November for a local Makers Market.

The Lovell Building has a long and glorious history as a cultural center for the community of Astoria. This 101-year-old building, located off Duane Street in the center of downtown, housed a community market in the wake of Astoria’s Great Fire of 1922, and later an impromptu theatre. Since moving into the abandoned auto repair shop and showroom in 2007, Fort George has hosted countless concerts, free lectures, art shows, writing groups, community fundraising events, weddings, birthdays, and various parties in the Lovell Showroom which also houses stacks of oak barrels filled with delicious future beer.

The Fort & Friends Makers Market will feature crafts, woodwork, pottery, art, clothing, cards, and more, all handmade by Fort employees and our closest friends.

Join our education crew in the Buoy Beer Taproom on the third Thursday of October, November, and December for some maritime trivia! Each month will have three rounds of trivia and prizes for the team that comes out on top. December’s trivia theme is “Maritime Munchies”!

Join us for our December TNT presentation by historian Rex Ziak, who will unravel the dramatic and often misunderstood story of Lewis and Clark’s arrival at the Pacific Ocean in 1805. Drawing from the explorers’ own journals, Ziak will guide the audience through their thirty-day ordeal near the mouth of the Columbia River, highlighting the ten days the party was marooned on Tongue Point and their frequent forays between present-day Warrenton and the John Day River.

Rex Ziak, an acclaimed historian and Emmy-winning cinematographer, is best known for his groundbreaking work on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. His book In Full View transformed America’s understanding of the explorers’ final journey along the Columbia River and inspired the creation of the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. Beyond history, Ziak co-founded OBON SOCIETY, a humanitarian effort returning World War II artifacts to families in Japan, blending scholarship, storytelling, and global outreach into a remarkable career.

The event is free and held at Fort George Brewery’s Lovell Showroom (14th & Duane, Astoria). Doors open at 6:00 p.m.; talk begins at 7:00 p.m. Food and beverages available. Minors welcome with an adult.

On the surface, Holidazed! is simply a Christmas-themed sketch show- there’s songs and dances and jingling bells and Tiny Tim and Santa. But at its core, Holidazed is a comedic missile of irreverence aimed at the holiday season. The show follows Santa as he quits Christmas and sets out to find the true meaning of celebrating the holidays. Along the way, Holidazed offers a variety of sketches and songs to exemplify the Capitalistic mess that the holidays have become, and reconnect with what it’s really about. “It’s not about spending money…it’s about spending time.”

Leave Your Troubles at The Door is a completely improvised stand-up comedy showcase where the audience's problems are the topics of the jokes on stage. Audience members write their problems / troubles down on pieces of paper, put them in a box before the show and then many of the best comedians from the Pacific Northwest and beyond take on those issues with their on-the-spot jokes. It's a rare comedy show where instead of the comedian joking about their problems, they joke about yours! (You can stay completely anonymous, too.) You're more than likely to walk away from the show feeling at least slightly better about your problems. Just leave 'em at the door.

The FALLEN HEROES tribute, honoring musicians we've lost over the year, is back!

Ring in the new year with live renditions of classic favorites, featuring an Astoria super-group ensemble, including members from Blind Pilot, Horse Feathers, The New Old Stock, Idanha, along with some very special guests.

This year's covers include music from Ozzy Osbourne, Roberta Flack, Brian Wilson, Sly Stone, and many more.

This McTavish Room show is STANDING-ROOM ONLY with extremely limited seating to those needing ADA accommodations.
