The Seven Last Words of Christ refers to the seven short phases that Jesus uttered on the cross, as gathered from the four Christian Gospels of Luke, John, Matthew and Mark. Traditionally these seven phrases are called words of: 1. Forgiveness.  2. Salvation. 3. Relationship. 4. Abandonment. 5. Distress. 6. Triumph and 7. Reunion.  These sayings form part of a Christian meditation often used during Holy Week.  The Crucifixion of Jesus has served as inspiration to a great many composers over the centuries. In particular, at least 16 composers have written musical settings of the Seven Last Words, for various combinations of voice and/or instruments.
