The Warrenton Community Library is hosting author Jerry Sutherland at "Library After Dark" on Saturday, January 10 at 4 p.m. Jerry will share more about his research process, read excerpts from his work and answer audience questions. Jerry Sutherland began researching Oregon history in 2012, after his father asked him to look up something about Calvin Tibbets at the Oregon Historical Society. That inevitably led to more visits, trips to archives across the United States and Canada, and the publishing of Calvin Tibbets: Oregon's First Pioneer in August 2016. Sutherland is also an avid hiker. One of his favorite jaunts is Bayocean, a sandspit that protects Tillamook Bay from the Pacific Ocean. In the fall of 2014, he learned that this pristine ecosystem once hosted a thriving resort. His surprise at having seen no evidence of it while wandering the spit led Sutherland to look deeper and wider than others had in the past. He created www.bayocean.net and started posting articles about Bayocean and its demise. Facebook history groups took notice. So did Grant McOmie, who in the summer of 2015 asked for help with a Grant’s Getaway program. Four years later, Jule Gilfillan consulted Sutherland on an Oregon Field Guide special. That and the increasing interest of publishers prompted him to write Bayocean: Atlantis of Oregon. After more than three years of work, it was published in February 2023. Author talk starts at 4 p.m.; refreshments and mingling at 5 p.m. Special thanks to Gaetano's Market & Deli for sponsoring the food. "Library After Dark" is a monthly PNW author series. This event is free to attend and is hosted by the Friends of Warrenton Community Library.

Cascadia Chamber Opera proudly announces its 2026 winter production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s enchanting one-act opera Amahl and the Night Visitors. Performances will take place Friday, January 9 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, January 11 at 3:00 PM. Tickets are now available at CascadiaChamberOpera.org.

Composed in 1951, Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors became the first opera ever written for American television, instantly capturing the nation’s imagination. Menotti, born in Italy and trained at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute, was celebrated for his gift at weaving lyrical, emotionally direct music with stories that speak to audiences of all ages. Amahl remains his most cherished work—a testament to his belief in the transformative power of kindness, humility, and generosity.

This fully staged, visually rich Cascadia Chamber Opera production brings Menotti’s score to life in all its warmth and color. In just under one hour, audiences will journey with young Amahl—a spirited boy with a vivid imagination—and his mother as they encounter three traveling kings following a miraculous star. Through humor, wonder, and a moment of profound sacrifice, the opera builds to a finale that has moved audiences for generations.

With its gorgeous music, intimate storytelling, and message of hope in challenging times, Amahl and the Night Visitors is the perfect family-friendly tradition to begin the new year.

The Astoria Social Justice Book Club typically meets the first or second Tuesday of each month, at 6 pm, at  the Commodore Hotel Lobby, 258 14th Street, Astoria.  Our discussions are always lively and informative.  Even if you haven’t finished, or even started the book to be discussed, you are welcome to come and listen, join in, meet new people, connect with friends.  

For January we will discuss "Coming Up Short" by Robert B. Reich.

"Writing Deep River with Karl Marlantes"-  Karl Marlantes was born in Astoria and grew up in Seaside, where he graduated from Seaside High School in 1963. He attended Yale University on a National Merit Scholarship and was graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Economics. He attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, graduating with an M.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics in 1972.

He fought in the Vietnam War as a Marine infantry officer in 1968 and 1969. He is the author of Deep River, Matterhorn, Cold Victory, and What It Is Like to Go to War.

He and his wife, Anne, have five children and seven grandchildren and spend time between their homes in Cannon Beach and Woodinville, WA.

"From Sensors to Salmon: The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission's CMOP Ocean and Estuary Research Program with Charles Seaton and Rosie Gradoville"
Dr. Rosie Gradoville is Lead Oceanographer for the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission’s CMOP program. She earned a BA in Biology from Barnard College in 2010 and a PhD in Ocean Ecology and Biogeochemistry from Oregon State University in 2017, and now leads the CMOP observatory, a long-term program based in Astoria that monitors the coastal ocean and the Columbia River estuary. Her team studies how physical, chemical, and ecological processes shape the estuary and nearby coastal waters, providing information that supports salmon restoration and other tribal priorities.
Charles Seaton is the Lead Modeler for the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission’s CMOP program. He has a BS in botany from the University of Massachusetts -Amherst, and an MS in Environmental Science and Engineering from Oregon Health & Science University. His team focuses on modeling the physical processes of the Columbia River estuary, coastal ocean. and the full Pacific Ocean. He has worked on the Columbia River estuary at CMOP for 25 years, across three different institutions.

Ten Fifteen Productions’ 2026 Season, America the Beautiful?, will begin later this month with What the Constitution Means to Me. This exploration of the blueprint of our country will help to set the tone of national self examination over the course of the year. Sponsored in part by a grant from the Clatsop County Cultural Coalition, the production dates and venue have been changed from the original announcement due to repairs occurring at the organization’s home in the Odd Fellows Building.

About the Show:
Playwright Heidi Schreck’s boundary-breaking play breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans. Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this hilarious, hopeful and achingly human new play, she resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives.
