A vacation can be the perfect opportunity to try something new. Whether it’s zip liningtasting an unfamiliar dish, or signing up for a class to explore a new skill, travel often emboldens us to step outside our routines and say yes to experiences we might not try at home.

Astoria and Warrenton invite that spirit of curiosity. Founded by, and still attracting, people with a penchant for exploration and discovery, the area offers countless ways to connect with local traditions while discovering something new.

From creative studios to welcoming gathering spaces, here are a few ways visitors (and residents alike) are uncovering new passions on Oregon's North Coast. These are just a few starting points. There are many more places to explore throughout the community.

Explore Visual Arts & Creative Expression

For those drawn to color, texture, and mixed media, Astoria’s galleries and studios offer a welcoming space to explore visual arts through classes, workshops, and open creative sessions. There’s something grounding about working with clay, especially when the rain taps softly at the windows. Fiber arts invite a different rhythm, one built stitch by stitch, whether you’re picking up needles for the first time or returning to a long-loved craft. Check out:

Not every new interest happens indoors. Nearby trails and natural areas offer space to wander, observe, and reset at your own pace. Walks through coastal forests and along waterways invite moments of reflection ideal for birdwatching, photography, or simply stepping away from a screen and into fresh air. Just bring comfortable shoes and a waterproof layer, and let nature do the rest.

More Ways to Explore Something New

Not every new interest requires a full class or long-term commitment. Sometimes it’s a small moment of inspiration that sticks. Astoria and Warrenton offer plenty of ways to experiment, observe, and connect—often unexpectedly. Here's a few more ideas:

  • Sketching or photography walks through historic neighborhoods and the working waterfront
  • Wildlife watching along riverfront paths and nearby trails
  • Tabletop games at a local game shop or arcade
  • Thrifting and upcycling coastal finds
  • Self-guided history walks through Astoria’s storied streets
  • Learning to dig razor clams, and how to prepare them at home
  • Try a flight of beer, wine or spirits that you are unfamiliar with

You never know which small moment might turn into your next favorite hobby.

Take a Little Inspiration Home

One of the joys of visiting Astoria and Warrenton in the off-season is experiencing life the way locals do: unhurried, creative, and community-minded. A pottery class, an author's workshop, or a nature walk might only take a few hours, but the inspiration often lasts much longer.

Come prepared with layers, curiosity, and a willingness to try something new. You might leave the coast with more than memories; you may discover a hobby!
